Slumscape Application

 CHARACTER
NAME: Vikenti Bunclarke
CANON: Ragnarok Online (OC)
CANON POINT: 22 years old, 2 years out of Sage Academy.
BACKGROUND: Vik began his journey as an adventurer at 15 years of age, setting out with his twin sister and a group of friends they arranged with to begin on his path to being a sage (scholars of the magic arts, specializing in using elements for enchantments and anti-magic abilities). He traveled across much of Rune-Midgard (one of the three main countries Ragnarok Online takes place in), during which he bonded with his party members and grew as both a magic user and a confident young adult.

While he was first capricious and oblivious, and did not have much of a sense of danger, his experience with adventuring allowed him to hone his senses and critical thinking skills. He's still optimistic and gutsy, but not quite as naive. At 18, he entered the Juno Sage Academy for a job change. Though it took him the better part of a year to pass his exams (he isn't great at actually absorbing information from reading, nor is he particularly eloquent in writing, something extremely important in academia obviously), he eventually completed his job change and received an official certification as a Sage.

After going separate ways with his sister and the rest of his group, Vikenti has been traveling on and off with his friend through the northern part of Midgard, researching magic and particularly the creation of spell scrolls (magical items that allow people to use spells on demand). He was in the middle of his travels when he found himself in Hakagemachi.

SUITABILITY: Vik is a curious, outgoing, helpful fellow. He'd be very interested in the kinds of magic there are in the setting...especially because his own will be gone.

And that will be a major pain point for him once he's in. Vik will be grappling over his inability to use his own magic (which he's spent years honing), and not even being able to use the spell scrolls he has, which, by their definition are able to be used by someone with very little magic power! However, he's the type who constantly presses on, who is willing to reach out to humans, youkai, and everything in between. He's the type to continue to look for answers… until he can't, and realizing that he needs help himself is a journey on its own, as well. He's still very young, and there's still a lot he doesn't know about life, but he's open to learning new things. What better way to do so than to dive into the deep end?

Between there being so much to learn, a mystery (something he can never resist), and the desire to both regain his own magic and to know more about the strange presence living inside him, Vikenti will have plenty to do.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character finds an injured okami deep in the woods. Its leg is broken, trapped under a fallen tree, but it’s clearly in good health otherwise. They know this type of youkai is able to discern the morality of their past actions, and can turn hostile to them based off that judgment. What do they do?

He doesn't hesitate, of course he helps. Not only does he have nothing to worry about (or else nothing he'd think about: he's played a few pranks in the past, but that hardly pings on his own radar), but he can't just walk by a creature in need.

If it turned on him based off of his slaying monsters (a common thing in his world, he doesn't think much about it and therefore wouldn't think of it), he'd try to defend himself but mostly try pleading with it. He really doesn't want to fight, especially if it's something he's saved, and that is still injured!

Your character's worst enemy asks to meet alone by moonlight in a remote location, to discuss temporarily banding together against a larger threat. How do they respond to the invitation?

He would go, especially if he knew what it was about. It's hard to think that Vik can make a worst enemy (since he takes it plenty in stride if someone doesn't like him, but he himself has to really be angry and slighted by someone for him to consider them his worst enemy).

He would have to take a moment to squash down any ill feelings he had toward them, something he'd do before he even left to meet them. He'd take the time to really try to get in the zone, into a very calm, neutral state of mind. He might have a backup, just in case--especially if the enemy has been violent, but he wants to think the best of people, wants to hear them out.

If the invitation was legitimate, he'd be relieved, and even happy. He'd hope it's a sign that things can look up between them, maybe.

If the invitation was a trick, he'd walk away from it bitter, and would have to take a minute to recover from the worst feelings. He wants to believe in the best of people, but he isn't a fool. It leaves a bad taste in his mouth when his optimism is shaken.

Your character has the option to lead a rampaging oni away from path where it would find and attack a lone, inhabited farmhouse. However, the only road they can distract it down leads to the city, where it will inevitably do more damage. What do they choose to do?

He'd let it go toward the farmhouse, but he'd run ahead to try to get everyone out. The optimist in him would think he could do the same thing in the city, but he doesn't want to risk it and understands the collateral damage would be too bad. If he can get to the people in the farmhouse, he thinks he can at least evacuate them…?!
He'd want to help rebuild afterwards, and would feel deeply responsible for it.

A shrine of a powerful god offers your character a unique boon crafted to overcome the biggest challenge they’re currently facing. In return, it only asks to be able to possess your character for a 24 hour span of its choosing, which they will not necessarily get warning for. How do they feel about the exchange, and more importantly, do they accept it?

Vikenti's approach definitely hinges on "can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs", or "things don't always come easy and that's fine." So… He would absolutely accept. He'd see it as a unique, even lucky opportunity for him. He wouldn't think much about the unexpectedness/randomness of the exchange. When dealing with gods, he has a pretty good idea that they're not beholden to all rules of reality or morality of humans. And... if he was going to be honest with himself, he's kind of curious at what it's like to be possessed by a god.
